Searge of Mojang recently showed off on twitter two tweets about what is coming up in the Minecraft 1.9 Update. As mentioned in the title there will be dual wielding. You will be able choose which hand is your main hand between the left and right. Apparently anything can be used except for a weapon in the “off hand”. So, think of using a sword in the main hand and a torch in the other, or a sword in one hand and a piece of food in the other. This will work on armor stands as well. I’m personally excited to finally see some news on the 1.9 update as well as what they can accomplish.
