Belgium Found To Not Be Enforcing Loot Box Ban

At the end of 2017, Belgium’s Ministry of Justice deemed loot boxes to be a form of gambling and banned the practice in the country the following year. However, it appears that the country has not been enforcing this ban as much as some have hoped.

According to a new study by loot box researcher Leon Y. Xiao many companies are ignoring the ban and scurrying around it. One specific market that has been violating it would be the mobile gaming market as 82% of the country’s 100 highest-grossing iPhone titles contain loot boxes.

Since the law was implemented, many major studios have either removed them from games or have outright decided to not released the game within Belgium.
