As reported by Bloomberg, a lawsuit has been filed in the federal court of California against GameStop. This lawsuit alleges that obtained and shared “the secret transcripts of those wiretaps with a third party that boasts of its ability to harvest personal data…” for marketing and other purposes.”
These would include things like tracking what GameStop customers looked up or purchased in store and sold that personal data to marketing companies for targeted advertisements.
If found to be true, GameStop would have violated the California Invasion of Privacy Act (CIPA) which states that “website operations cannot create transcripts of visitors’ conversations without obtaining prior, express consent from all parties to the conversation.”
