During the AMD Computex event, the company officially revealed that the Playstation 5 will be using their Navi GPU and Ryzen “Zen 2” CPU. It’s also been revealed that the GPU of the PS5 will use RDNA architecture instead of GCN architecture.
Some of the advantages to using the RDNA architectural GPU includes the following:
- 1.5x performance-per-watt
- 1.25 performance-per-clock improvement over previous architecture
- New compute unit design – improved efficiency and increased IPC
- Multi-level cache hierarchy – reduced latency, higher bandwidth, lower power
- Streamlined graphics pipeline – optimized for performance-per-clock and high clock speeds
The first Navi GPUs AMD will be used on Radeon RX5000 series GPUs which release in July. It will be interesting to see what kind of performance they can fine-tune with the Playstation 5 before its inevitable launch.
