In a recent interview with MinnMax, Super Mario RPG director Chihiro Fujioka revealed that he would love to make a sequel to the game as his final credit in the video game world.
Transcribed by NintendoLife, Fujioka said:
“Yeah, I would absolutely love to make one… yeah, so in my career, I’ve been involved in a lot of games and I would really like my final one to be another Mario RPG game, if possible…”
Super Mario RPG is considered by many to be not only one of the best RPGs of all-time, but also one of the best Nintendo titles. The closest we have gotten to a sequel was in the mid to late 90s when a sequel was planned, but ultimately became what we know today as Paper Mario.
